CU MVB goes 1-1 at the Georgetown Tri-Match

GEORGETOWN, Ky.-- Cumberland men's volleyball went 1-1 at the Georgetown Tri-Match after sweeping Aquinas 3-0 and losing to No. 6 Georgetown in 3-0 fashion.

Cumberland 3, Aquinas 0

The Phoenix dominated their first match of the day, securing a 3-0 sweep to get things started. Cumberland Cumberland out-hit Aquinas .311 to .175 and recorded five less attacking errors. 

Luka Ilic led the Phoenix in kills with 13 while also collecting ten digs. Jordan Pierce put together another impressive performance as the setter for the Phoenix, racking up 38 assists with ten digs.

Cumberland got off to a quick start in set one, jumping ahead 10-5 with the aid of a 7-2 run. The Phoenix continued to apply pressure and eventually took their largest lead of the set at 15-7. The Saints started to claw their way back into the match but a powerful hit by Christian Lester capped off a 25-23 set one victory.

Unlike set one, the Phoenix got off to a bit of a slower start in set two, quickly falling behind 4-1. Thankfully a 5-0 Phoenix run with three kills would give the Phoenix the lead at 6-4. Back and forth action brought the score to a tightly contested 18-16 with Cumberland still out in front. Cumberland put the set away with four kills, a service error, and an attack error winning 25-20 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Cumberland carried their momentum into set three where they started the match on a 5-0 run. Unfortunately for Cumberland the Saints would not back down as they retaliated with a 7-1 run of their own to go up 7-6 in the set. The rest of the set featured a close battle but Ilic helped seal the deal with two late kills and Kix Ferrell slammed the door for the final point helping Cumberland win 25-22 and complete the 3-0 sweep.

Cumberland 0, Georgetown 3 

Cumberland battled in set one against No. 6 Georgetown. The match started 6-7 before the Tigers would go on a 5-2 run to take a 12-8 lead. A 6-1 Phoenix run backed by two Codville Rogers kills helped put them in front 14-13. Unfortunately Georgetown would go on a 4-0 run and follow it up later with a 5-0 run to help put Cumberland away and win the set 25-20.

The Phoenix competed in set two similarly to how they did in the first set. They improved their hitting percentage to .139 in the second set but Georgetown hit an impressive .278 as a team in the set. Both teams battled back and forth with the largest lead only being three points all the way until the end. The set score was 20-22 in favor of the tigers when they went on a 3-0 run to close out the set winning 25-20.

Cumberland struggled in set three, posting a hitting percentage of -.059 in the set. Georgetown quickly jumped out to a 8-2 lead and later stretched their lead to 16-7 with a 6-0 run. The Tigers cruised the rest of the way winning 25-14 to complete the 3-0 sweep over the Phoenix.

Cumberland men's volleyball will be back on the court March 4 for the Rio Grande Tri-Match.
