Box Score Columbia, Ky.-- Cumberland softball completes the series sweep over Lindsey Wilson with a nine inning game. Two homeruns at the top of the ninth sent the Phoenix over the Blue Raiders to wrap up the successful weekend.
Ashton Whiles and Madison Koczersut recorded huge homeruns for the Phoenix to secure the win, adding two and four RBIs respectively.
Cumberland jumped on the board first in the top of the second when Kenzie France hit a double to right center and was sent home on the next at-bat by Koczersut’s double to center field. The Blue Raiders had a bases loaded situation in the bottom for an opportunity to take the lead, but Kaitlyn Higgins checked in and forced two groundouts to send it into the third.
Lindsey Wilson once again loaded up their bases at the bottom of the third and got on the board as Elizabeth Funk headed in on Brooklynn Ott’s groundout to shortstop.
The next three innings were quiet for both sides with a 1-1 tied match. Cumberland reclaimed their lead at the top of the seventh as Whiles singled to centerfield to score Ashley Evans.
The Blue Raiders took the plate and were quick to respond, tying it up at the fourth at-bat when a single to leftfield scored Natalie Shaw.
At the top of the extra inning, Koczersut was walked and reached third on an error. Allie Burleson flied out to center to bring Koczersut in and give Cumberland the 3-2 advantage. The lead would be short lived for CU as the Blue Raiders once again had an answer. Funk hit a single to center field and advanced on the throw to bring Za’Kiya Sizemore home, forcing a ninth inning.
On the second at-bat of the ninth, Whiles homered through center field to put the Phoenix back on top. Koczersut sealed the deal with a 3-RBI homer to left field for a 7-3 lead- the largest by either side all game.
Annalee Moore completed the game inside the circle for CU, punching out one hitter and inducing a double-play finish to complete the series sweep.
Cumberland will complete the regular-season at home next weekend against Georgetown. The series will kick off on April 28 at 2 pm with the final two matches the following day.
