Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland softball could not get the bats going, suffering a doubleheader sweep against Georgetown College. The Phoenix lost game one 4-0 and lost game two 9-0.
The Tigers had an eventful first inning with two stolen bases, three hits, and a run. The Phoenix struggled at the plate early on as Claxon dominated the circle, keeping the CU from recording a hit until the bottom of the third.
Neither added any runs to the score as Griffith and Claxon kept the batter activity to a minimum. The Tigers pushed out their lead at the top of the seventh, recording three runs on three hits for a 4-0 score.
The Phoenix fought to put themselves on the board at the bottom with two hits as Jacey Hatfield doubled to left center and Koczersut followed up with a single to the left side. The runners would be left stranded as Claxon punched out the final two batters to secure Georgetown’s win.
The Tigers carried their momentum into game two, scoring nine runs on 13 hits with three Phoenix errors. Cumberland recorded seven hits in the game off of seven different bats and was held scoreless in the game.
Georgetown jumped on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs thanks to a double by Ashley Shelton. The Tigers broke the score open in the bottom of the fifth where they added five runs on five hits and three Phoenix errors.
The Tigers extended their lead to 9-0 in the top of the seventh inning after scoring on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.
Emma Cummings controlled the entire game from the circle and shut the Phoenix down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 9-0 win for the Tigers.
The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow at Noon for their regular season and series finale.
