Latimer Locks In All-American Honors and Advances to Semifinals Tonight

WICHITA, Kan.--Jack Latimer posts a win to secure All-American status and advance to the semifinals. Cole Smith and Sammy Shires each lost their bouts and will be in the blood round tonight to try to lock in All-American honors. 

Grand View has taken over the lead after Session III with 112.0 points. Life University is five points back at 107.0. It will be between the Running Eagles and the Vikings for this years championship as third place is over 50 points behind the two. 

Menlo is in third while Southeastern is fourth place. Campbellsville is in fifth. The Phoenix have dropped down to 11th place with 28.5 points. 

Cumberlands sits in seventh place with 23.0 points. Southeastern is in eighth with 22.5 points followed by the Phoenix in ninth with 21.5. Missouri Valley and Reinhardt are each tied for 10th with 17.5 team points. 

Jack Latimer secures All-American honors with a win in the quarterfinals and stays in the hunt for a National title. Latimer fended off No. 4 seed Parker Dobrocky from Southeastern with a 2-0 win. The first period went scoreless and the second Latimer displayed his strength by maintaining control on top for the entire two minutes. He then picked up an escape in the third and earned the riding time point for a 2-0 win. Latimer now advances to the semifinals and will face his teammate from last season and No. 1 seed Blake Gonzalez from Grand View tonight with a trip to the finals on the line. 

Sammy Shires had a battle with 6-seed Dominic Chavez from Texas Wesleyan. The two were tied at 5-5 after seven minutes of wrestling and Chavez was able to get a takedown in sudden victory to advance and knock Shires to the backside. Shires will need a win tonight to solidify All-American status for the second-consecutive year. He will take on 15-seed Dillon Witt from Missouri Baptist. 

Cole Smith got caught in the quarterfinals by No. 10 seed Graham Calhoun. Smith was pinned in the first period to fall to the consolation round. Smith will face No. 12 seed Gabe Martinez from Campbellsville for a chance to become a four-time NAIA All-American. Smith and Martinez faced each other earlier this season with Smith picking up a 15-5 major decision. 

Rocco Horvath lost in the third round on the backside against 8-seed Kyle Knudtson from Eastern Oregon. Knudston had a 14-1 lead before posting a pin to end Horvath's run in the tournament. 

Kawaun Deboe also dropped his match to end his tournament run. Deboe faced the 11-seed form Kenneth Copley from Embry-Riddle and Copley picked up a 11-0 major decision. 

Session IV will begin tonight with just three Phoenix left. Latimer will be the first to wrestle with a spot in the finals on the line before the blood round begins.
