Big Day for Brogdon Propels Phoenix to DH Sweep over Georgetown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Georgetown, Kentucky - - After a tight contest in game one, the Phoenix came alive in the second game of the day to grab a doubleheader sweep over the Georgetown Tigers.

The Tigers came out of the gates swinging after the Phoenix had a toothless first inning, stealing two bases and scoring a run from a single up the middle. Cumberland came back in the top of the second inning and applied pressure, forcing two errors in the process, though they would remain scoreless.

Georgetown managed two hits in the bottom of the frame but Kaitlin Higgins was able to get herself out of the jam with no damage done. Anna Lay was able to reach base to lead off the inning again, though the Tigers again allowed nothing more, keeping the game at 1-0.

In the bottom of the third Georgetown again found success, although they did not register a hit in the inning. A walk and an error scored the second run of the game and a ground out to second base pushed across the final runner on base, taking the game to 3-0.

Cumberland finally managed to break through the Tigers defense in the fourth though, totaling three hits, two walks, and a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 ballgame. A pair of errors in the bottom of the frame helped to widen GC's lead again, 4-2.

After that point it was all Phoenix, starting with Jacey Hatfield being hit by a pitch. Sara Brogdon was able to take advantage of the mistake and smack a double into deep right field, scoring Hatfield in the process.

Abbie Peach then hit a single and while trying to stretch it into a double, forced an error from the left fielder, which allowed Brogdon to score and tied the game. The sixth inning was a wash, as both teams went three-up and three-down, making for a dramatic final inning.

Cumberland came into the seventh with bad intentions, as Kenzie France hit a leadoff go-ahead home run down the left field line. Hatfield, Brogdon, and Bartley all singled to follow France's effort, scoring an RBI off the end of Bartley's bat in the process.

With a two run lead all the Phoenix needed to do was shut the Tigers down and record three more outs. Pitching yet another complete game, Higgins forced weak contact three times and won her eighth game of the season.

Cumberland was able to start game one of the doubleheader on the same note, scoring runs early and often. Anna Lay slapped an infield single and legged out a steal as Ashley Evans was up to bad.

Evans was then able to reach on an error from the pitcher and would push Lay over to third base. From there Abby Chappell was able to put a ball in play, advancing both runners, taking a 1-0 lead while doing it.

Straight away Kenzie France kept her bat hot and scored Evans on a single up the middle, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Jacey Hatfield was also able to reach base on a fielder's choice and Sara Brogdon hit a two-strike double to go ahead 3-0 before the Tigers ever saw a pitch.

Georgetown found themselves a run in the bottom of the inning to make the game a bit tighter, sitting at 3-1 for some time.

It took two more innings but it was again Cumberland who did more damage, putting up a monster five runs in the third inning. It was again Brogdon adding to her RBI total, hitting a two-run double to the same spot she did earlier, growing the CU lead to five runs.

Brylee Bartley was then able to hit a single through the middle and score Brogdon, advancing to scoring position on the throw home. Abbie Peach then walked to put runners on first and second, and Gracie Arnemann hit a double to send both runners home, now leading 8-1.

Georgetown was able to answer in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs of their own on five hits, including a leadoff double to get their bats started. Only recording a single hit the following inning, Cumberland was able to find success on the base paths.

Ashley Evans walked to lead off the inning and stole second, getting her in position for Kenzie France to slap a single and score her. Briana De La Maza then ran for France and advanced twice on passed balls to find her way home, making the game 10-4.

Georgetown again put up a lone run in the bottom of the inning, hitting a single and using a wild pitch and a steal to get into scoring position with no outs. A sacrifice fly pushed the runner home and the inning ended with the Tigers now halfway to the Phoenix's run total.

The Tigers managed to add more runs to their total in the sixth inning, hitting a single and walking two batters for Ashley Herron to hit a bases clearing double and tighten the game back up, 10-8. Cumberland had had enough of the Tigers comeback efforts and drove the nail in the coffin in the top of the seventh.

After Anna Lay hit a lead-off single and stole two bases the Tigers forced two strikeouts, making it look as though the charge might've been over, but the Phoenix had other ideas. Jacey Hatfield, Sara Brogdon, Abbie Peach, Anna Lay, and Ashley Evans all scored runners in the seven run explosion.

Forcing the run-rule to take effect, Annalee Moore came in and shut down the Tigers to end the game 17-8.

Games three and four will be played tomorrow in Georgetown again, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 AM.
