LEBANON, Tenn. - - No. 13 Cumberland Men's Soccer looks to finish their regular season on a high note as they go on the road to face Campbellsville.
The Phoenix (11-1-3) (3-1-1) are on a major hot streak, as they have been unbeaten in six straight contests and have outscored their opponents 31-3 in this run, including a 9-0 rout of Georgetown in their most recent match.
Freshman forward
Miquel Gelabert recorded his first career hat trick in the matchup against Georgetown on Monday, with the Spaniard, alongside juniors Philip Schmidtke and
Luis Cerejo, being three of only seven players in the NAIA to have recorded 10+ goals and 10+ assists on the season. Gelabert has recorded 12 goals and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Schmidtke has scored 15 goals and 10 assists, and Cerejo has scored 10 goals and 13 assists. Alongside freshman midfielder
Pau Ortega (11 goals and five assists), the Phoenix have four players in the top 25 in points scored in the NAIA.
In net, senior goalkeeper Eric Zalaya has had a strong second half of the season. In the six game undefeated streak, the Spaniard has stopped 20 shots on goal on a .869 save percentage. Which earned him two conference Defensive Player of the Week awards and one NAIA Defensive Player of the Week award.
For the Tigers (8-6) (2-3), they just came off of a close loss to the Cumberlands 0-1 and are looking to bounce back.Â
Campbellsville is led offensively by junior forward Mihlali Blesi, who has scored seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Blesi was able to win a Mid-South Offensive Player of the Week award for his work against Judson (Ill.) and Georgetown (Ky.) where he scored two goals and an assist.
In net, sophomore goalkeeper Malthe Schou has been consistent for the Tigers. Posting 46 saves on a .687 save percentage including three saves against the Cumberlands.
The series between the Phoenix and Tigers has been even, for the most part. With Cumberland having a record of 9-10-4 when they faced Campbellsville. In the most recent match, the Phoenix were able to get a 3-0 shutout at home. When Cumberland travels to Campbellsville, they have a record of 5-5-1.
As things currently stand in the Mid-South standings, Cumberland is tied in second place with Bethel (Tenn.) with a conference record of 3-1-1. They can stay in second place if they can get a better result than Bethel. The range at where the Phoenix can finish in the standings are between second and fourth place.
