Volleyball Seals Another Sweep in Bristol Against King University

Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Volleyball Team headed east to Bristol to take on NCAA opponents, King University for their sixth match of the season.

Cumberland ran out to an early 3-0 lead and the Tornado couldn't find their way into the set as the Phoenix kept that distance for the rest of the frame. Jake Whyte and Joao Infante provided the majority of the action for CU, combining for an incredible 14 of the Phoenix's 19 kills in the set victory.

Statistically the second set was much closer, seeing King hit 10 kills of their own to the Phoenix's 13, though each side was separated by over .200 percentage points in the attacking department. Cumberland's swift attacking measures put them in a position to take the second set 25-18, aided by clinical hitting from Whyte and Kaden Kuehler.

Catching some momentum in the third set, the Tornado rallied to take an early lead that they kept ahold of that lead for the rest of the frame. Trailing by as many as six, Cumberland needed a spark and several attempts looked like it might have provided it.

Two errors and two Chance Gallardo aces in a row took the Phoenix from 18-12 to 18-16, scratching on a comeback as they looked for the sweep in East Tennessee. A service error gave King the ball back but Joao Infante put away two kills in a row to get the Phoenix the ball back.

Trailing 21-19, Cumberland rattled off three straight points to take the lead for the first time in the set and despite King tying it back up, they couldn't hold back the Phoenix. Sealing the sweep for Cumberland, Jake Whyte landed a kill to make it 25-24 and an attacking error gave the Phoenix the win.

Jake Whyte took charge of attacking this duties and landed 15 kills while hitting at nearly a 50% clip, while Joao Infante also chipped in with 10 kills. Not to be outdone, Chance Gallardo and Kaden Kuehler both had more kills than any Tornado attacker with eight and seven, respectively.

Cumberland will be back in action next Thursday, February 20th when they take on Tusculum.
