Martin Honored with MSC Defensive Player of the Week After Eleven Save Weekend

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Picking up a big shutout and win over the weekend, Celia Martin played her part as well as anyone in the conference, being named MSC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, as was announced by the league office this afternoon.

In the first game of the weekend, the Phoenix had to battle through a scoreless halftime draw, weathering countless counterattacks from Siena Heights. Finally in the second half Cumberland found their breakthrough but Martin's abilities in net helped to keep the CU in the 3-0 victory.

The second game of the weekend was not so kind to the Phoenix but Martin showed her merit by making eight saves against the No. 11 ranked Marian Knights. Coming out of the halftime break with a 2-1 lead, Marian played with confidence and it was the Spaniard in net that made several pivotal saves to keep the Phoenix within striking distance all the way to the end.

The honor is the first of the season for the shotstopper as well as the first of Martin's career.

Cumberland will be right back at home on Wednesday to take on the Brescia Bearcats.
