Mendez Brings Home Silverware as Women's Tennis Take on MSC Fall Championship

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team took part in the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament this past weekend, as Valentina Mendez won her singles flight.

In doubles action Asya Tilsim Timur and Maria Arbelaez dropped their lone match in the top flight to Lindsey Wilson, 7-5.

Juanita Mendez and Elina Sungatullina fell 6-2 in the second doubles flight to another Lindsey Wilson pairing.

In the top singles flight Maria Arbelaez drew the University of the Cumberlands No. 1 and ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4 to the Patriots.

Asya Tilsim Timur and Elina Sungatullina both played in the second singles flight, with each player finding their own success. Timur dropped her opener 6-1, 6-1 but won two more matches on the bounce to win the losers bracket. The sophomore picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over FHU and then finally took down the Patriots for a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Sungatullina started in the bottom half of the bracket and grabbed a big win over Georgetown, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Running out of steam, the Russian took Lindsey Wilson to a third set tiebreak but ultimately fell, 6-2, 2-6, 6-10.

Juanita Mendez took on the fourth flight by herself and lost her opening round to Lindsey Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, but recovered for a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own in the following round against Georgetown.

Last but not least, Valentina Mendez ran the gauntlet at six singles, beating a pair of Patriots and a Lion. Her six straight sets of victory started against the Cumberlands, winning 6-3, 6-2, then picking up another win in straight sets over Freed-Hardeman. In her championship match against the Patriots, Mendez kept her hot streak up with a 6-4. 7-5 victory.
