Men’s Bowling Improves In Their Second Day In Louisville Behind Three Top Ten Performances

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Phoenix End Day Two as Runner Ups After Strong Start To Get Ready For The MSC Championships.

Cumberland Men's Bowling finished in second place in the MSC Thomas N Burris Memorial tournament with a score of 5958. Tennessee Wesleyan won the tournament with a score of 6045. Belmont Abbey finished in third with a score of 5931, McKendree finished in fourth with a score of 5818, and Pikeville scored 5678 pins to round out the top five.

The Phoenix had a strong first game, scoring 1105 pins to open up match play on Sunday, but they sat in fifth as Union Commonwealth scored 1126 pins, Pikeville scored 1129 pins, Milligan scored 1130 pins, and Tennessee Wesleyan scored 1186 pins to lead the field. Braxton Dedmon had an impressive start in game one scoring a 249, which was seventh in the first game. After game two, Cumberland was able to jump every team in front of them to lead the pack heading into the halfway point. The Phoenix scored 1185 pins, for a total of 2290 pins after game two. McKendree was sitting in second with a score of 2194. Dedmon and Carter Baylog had massive game twos, as the pair both passed the 260 pin mark to lead the way for Cumberland.

After the third game, Cumberland was able to maintain the lead, but it was starting to shrink. The Phoenix scored 1092 pins for a total of 3382. McKendree was able to get just a little bit closer with a score of 1131 in game three for a total of 3325. All five Phoenix bowlers were able to reach 200 pin counts to keep the lead. Finally, as the Phoenix end the standard games and head into the baker games, the lead for Cumberland shrinks even further, as the Phoenix score 997 pins to finish the four standard games with a score of 4359. McKendree finished with 4318 pins and Tennessee Wesleyan had a strong last game, getting to 4315 pins.

After the first four baker games, the Phoenix would maintain their lead and distance with 802 pins in the four games, for an average of 200.5 to get a total score of 5161. Tennessee Wesleyan would hop McKendree and slide into second with a total score of 5129. Finally, Cumberland would get passed for the lead in the last four baker games as the Phoenix scored 797 pins, for an average of 199.25 to get to a final score of 5958. Meanwhile, Tennessee Wesleyan scores 916 pins for an average of 229 to reach the score of 6045.

Individually for the Phoenix, Dedmon and Baylog were able to get top five in the tournament, with Baylog finishing in third with a score of 951, for an average of 237.8 and Dedmon scored 950, for an average of 237.5. Both bowlers were within five pins of the winner of the tournament, who scored 955 pins. Jacob Ballenger would finish not too far behind with a score of 884, for an average of 221 to reach eighth place. Malik Randolph would finish with an 800 score, for an average of 200 per game. Ethan Gomez would play three games for an average of 200.3, and Kaden Yarborough would only bowl one game, where Yarborough scored a 173 in game one. 

The Phoenix have a short turnaround as they have to get ready for the Mid-South Conference Championships in Bowling Green, starting on February 5th.
