Cumberland Women’s Bowling Uses Hot Start in Day One To Reach Knockout Rounds in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --  Phoenix use strong starts in both days to propel into the top eight in the Hoosier Classic.

The first day of the Hoosier Classic is five standard games for all 64 teams, and after the first game, Cumberland would be sitting in the top five, sitting in fifth place with a score of 1019. Then after game two, the Phoenix would drop to tenth place, as Cumberland would score 950 pins, for a total pin count of 1969.

After the first five baker games, Cumberland would drop below the cut line as the Phoenix fell to ninth place with a score of 910 pins (182 pin average) through the first third of day two, for a total pin count of 5760, and sit 11 pins behind the cut line, which was now Aquinas, who is sitting with 5771. Heading into the final five baker games of the qualification round, Cumberland would be able to find the grooves of the lanes, as the Phoenix scored 998 pins (199.6 average) in games 6-10 to reach sixth place with a score of 6758. Cumberland would be 44 pins ahead of ninth place Missouri Baptist.

After all 15 baker games, the Phoenix would score 878 pins and drop to eighth place in the standings, which is just enough to make the knockout rounds with a score of 7636. Cumberland would make the top eight by seven pins as the ninth place team, Lawrence Tech, finished with a score of 7629. In the 15 baker games, the Phoenix scored 2786 pins, for an average score of 185.73 pins per game.

In that first round, Pikeville would sweep Cumberland 2-0 and move on to the second round. The finals of the tournament would have second-seed Mount Mercy sweeping Pikeville 3-0 to win the Columbia 300 Hoosier Classic.

Within the conference, Pikeville finished as the top seed with a score of 7994, but finished the tournament as runner-ups. Tennessee Welseyan finished in 10th place with a score of 7586.
