Men’s Volleyball Look to Pick up Two Conference Wins at Home This Weekend

LEBANON, TENN.- -Men's volleyball will be looking to bounce back after a tough defeat to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods last weekend. The Phoenix will face RV Oakland City University on Friday followed by a match up with Brescia University on Saturday. 

Cumberland comes into the weekend with a 3-6 overall record and sits 0-1 in the conference.

In their most recent match, Cumberland lost in five to Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods in what was a very close match. Senior outside hitter Joao Infante had an incredible evening, with a career high and program record 36 kills to earn NAIA Attacker of the Week. Infante had a .475 hitting percentage and averaged 7.20 kills per set. The senior also leads the conference in kills. Austin Kuehler had 64 assists on the night while Francesco Corradini had five blocks at the net, Corradini also leads the conference in blocks per set. The Phoenix finished the game with a .336 hitting percentage, while holding the Pomeroys to a .270. For the Phoenix, looking to clean up on errors will be a key part in getting a win this weekend. 

The first opponent Cumberland will face is Oakland City who come into the game with a 7-3 overall record and are also 0-1 in the conference. The Mighty Oaks lost their conference opener in three sets to No.15 Georgetown College. 

Bryan Trubides Pepen leads the Mighty Oaks attack with a total of 103 kills, averaging 3.55 per set and having a .276 hitting percentage. Leonardo Cirquiera has been consistent for Oakland City on the defensive end, with 79 digs overall, averaging 2.72 per set. The Mighty Oaks had an impressive victory against No.10 Benedictine University Mesa. A first conference victory is at stake in this game so both teams will be eager to take the victory. 

The Phoenix are only in their second season in the River States Conference, so the history between the sides is short. It's currently 1-1, so this weekend will be another evenly contested match. In the last match last season, the Phoenix took a 3-1 victory. 

On Saturday the Phoenix will face Brescia University. The Bearcats have had a very mixed start to the season going 6-6 in regular season and 1-1 in the conference. Brescia defeated Rio Grande in three straight sets before falling to Campbellsville in four. 

Freshman Malo Vandewalle leads the way in kills with 104 averaging 2.42 per set. The freshman also has helped out defensively with 1.56 digs per set. Miguel Pereira and Finn Berger have found success at the service line with nine service aces each, While Vandewalle has hit an impressive 17. 

Cumberland holds a 5-0 lead over Brescia in all time history. The Phoenix took a 3-1 win in the most recent match up and will look to keep a perfect record against the Bearcats. 

Friday night's match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. while Saturdays will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena. Catch both games live on the Cumberland Sports Network.
