Volleyball Start Strong but Can't Hold off No.13 Tigers

Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. - - Cumberland's strong start wasn't enough as they fell in four sets to Georgetown in their final regular season match. 

Joao Infante kept up his form as he led the Phoenix in kills with 19 and a .469 hitting percentage. While Zendai Richards chipped in with 13. Austin Kuehler was active with 40 assists on the night, while Alexander Heuer had 10 digs. The Phoenix finished the night with a .267 hitting percentage. 

It was the Phoenix who got on the front foot early with a four point run which included two Infante kills and a Heuer service ace. The Tigers responded with a 1-5 run to give themselves the lead for the first time in the set at 9-12. Both teams battled and were going back and forth in what was an evenly contested set. Cumberland kept their lead through a block from Frederick Amegbletor and back to back kills from Infante before a Tiger attack error gave set point to the Phoenix. 

Georgetown regrouped and started the second set with a lot more intensity, taking the early 5-8 lead. The Phoenix didn't let the set get away from them and with two Amegbletor kills and a pair of Tigers attack errors were able to tie the set. Georgetown managed to regain a slim advantage at 15-17 before widening the gap with a couple of kills from Zucchiatti and Aunca as the Phoenix took a timeout at 18-20. Cumberland battled back and with some big kills from Richards and Mason Bryan were able to bring the set level at 24-24 as Georgetown took the timeout. It was the home side that were able to take the set 27-29. 

The Tigers had found their rhythm and with some big kills managed to gain the early 4-7 lead. Cumberland kept themselves within touching distance, however, the Tigers kept their lead at 7-11. Georgetown displayed some great volleyball, and with a number of kills managed to extend their lead to 10-18 and really put some pressure on the Phoenix. The home side were able to see out the third set comfortably. 

Both teams battled and got points on the board early however, it was Georgetown who went on a four point run to give themselves the 10-14 lead. Cumberland went on a three point lead to cut the gap to one point. The Tigers went on a 1-5 run to extend their lead and give themselves a bit of breathing space. Georgetown controlled the remainder of the set and eased to a 17-25 victory.

The Phoenix will wait until the bracket release to find out who they will face in the River States Conference tournament that is set to begin on Tuesday 14.
