LEBANON, Tenn. – Jessica Pace posted her 17th career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Josette Campbell netted 15 points with a trio of 3-pointers, as seventh-ranked Cumberland opened a big first-half lead and cruised to a 56-41 victory over Berea College on Saturday in the 9th Annual Rosa Stokes Classic.

With the win the Bulldogs (11-0) remained unbeaten despite a subpar performance, especially in the second half. CU led 36-17 at the break but shot just 29 percent from the field and committed nine turnovers in the second half.

Campbell scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half and Simone Ryan came off the bench to record 11 points. Pace registered her fifth double-double of the season and could have had more points, going just 3-for-10 at the foul line after entering the game shooting at a 70 percent clip at the charity stripe.

Cumberland dominated the glass in the contest, outrebounding the Mountaineers, 50-32, including five each from London Elie and TaCouya Allen. Pace added four assists and three steals in 34 minutes to lead the club in both of those categories as well.

Makenzie Stoner led the way for Berea (4-8) with 14 points, nine over the final six minutes of the first half, while Anna Loveless grabbed 10 rebounds. The Mountaineers shot just 29 percent from the field in the game, including 1-for-15 from behind the arc.

The Bulldogs started the game sluggishly but led 7-4 after an Elie layup a little less than five minutes into the contest. Johnesha Warren made 1-of-2 free throws for the Mountaineers on their next trip down the floor, but from there Berea found a host of trouble on the offensive end, netting just two points over the next eight-plus minutes.

The visitors made just 1-of-9 field goals and committed six turnovers during the stretch, and CU took full advantage, putting together a 24-2 run. Campbell and Ryan registered the first 12 points of the spurt and Campbell netted nine total in the run, including a pair of 3-pointers. Pace’s bucket underneath stretched the lead to 31-7 with 5:49 left in the half.

Stoner’s layup at 5:43 ended the stretch for Berea and the senior added seven more points before the half. CU led 36-17 at the break but scored just one field goal over the last five minutes.

Cumberland netted just one field goal in the first seven minutes of the second period, a short jumper in the lane by Ryan, and Malena Steve’s bucket at 14:54 pulled Berea within 39-24, but that was as close as the visitors would get on this day.

Cumberland next plays on December 28-29 at the Union College Holiday Classic in Barbourville, Ky., facing Tennessee Wesleyan and host Union College.
