LEBANON, Tenn. – Casie Cowan scored 16 points and Jessica Pace grabbed 10 rebounds, leading No. 7 Cumberland to a 68-57 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday at the Union College Holiday Classic in Barbourville, Ky.

The Bulldogs (12-0) remained undefeated with the win, the club’s first game in two weeks, while shooting 46 percent from the field. Cowan made two of the team’s six 3-pointers in the contest while Briannica Tye netted a trio of trifectas and posted 15 points and three assists.

Pace registered her seventh double-figure rebounding game of the season and netted nine points with three assists as well for the winners. Freshman Calamity Jane Coley added nine points and five boards off the bench and London Elie produced seven points and six caroms for CU.

Michelle Davis was the only Tennessee Wesleyan (4-5) player in double figures with 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while five other TWC players each posted six or more points.

Elie’s bucket with 15:45 left in the first half gave Cumberland the lead for good after TWC took its only lead of the contest on a 3-pointer by Davis. Tye followed Elie’s basket with a trifecta, part of a 14-4 spurt that gave CU a 18-9 edge midway through the opening period. Tye added another 3-pointer during the run and Coley finished it with a layup at the 9:35 mark.

Alli Moreland and Cody Houck hit consecutive 3-pointers as part of an 8-0 run for Wesleyan late in the half, cutting the Bulldogs advantage to five, but Yalonda Davis and Jessica Pace had buckets for CU in the final minute for a 37-28 advantage at the break.

TWC scored eight straight points in the opening minutes of the second period as well, leaving Cumberland with a 39-36 lead, but the Bulldogs answered with an 11-3 spurt to push the advantage to 15 with 6:16 remaining. Tye hit a 3-pointer and another basket to start the run and Coley, Pace and Cowan all added buckets.

CU was just 5-of-10 at the foul line in the final 3-plus minutes, allowing Wesleyan to pull within six after a basket by Bailey Lyness with a minute left, but Tye made a pair of free throws and Cowan and TaCouya Allen both scored field goals in the final seconds.

Cumberland takes on 18th-ranked and host Union College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Central Time before returning home January 3 to take on Mid-South Conference foe St. Catharine College at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
