LEBANON, Tenn- Cumberland women's hoops avenged an early season loss to Fisk Tuesday night at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena, 57-50.
The Phoenix (2-4) did not have their best shooting night, shooting 36.2% from the floor and only hit 2-of-21 three point attempts on the night. Despite the poor shooting, Cumberland was able to force 12 turnovers and did well to get to the line and convert on their free throws. The defense played good enough to force Fisk into shooting 32.3% and get the win.
Sophomore Britany Miller led the Phoenix with her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Gracie Johnson finished with 10 points, Mackenzie Trouten with nine and Devon Burns posted seven off the bench.
Fisk's Ileah Chambly led all scorers with 16 points as well as posting 13 rebounds while her running mate down low collected 15 points. The Bulldogs collected 45 rebounds as a team, six more than the Phoenix.
Gracie Johnson opened up the game quickly with four points in the first five minutes to help the Phoenix get out to a 8-4 lead. Brittany Miller was fouled in the paint to get two free throws and hit them both. Right after Kennedi Stephens hit a jumper for the top of the key and Johnson wet right back at with a jumper in the paint of her own. Cumberland ended the first quarter with a 14-10 lead.
Kennedy Powell opened up the 2nd with a layup followed by Johnson hitting another jumper in the paint to get up eight, but Fisk would not go away. Rallying to only be trailing by 2 points at the half, 27-25.
The Bulldogs took the lead halfway through the third quarter when Chambly hit a contested layup, but the lead was short lived as Burns hit a three from the wing to spark a 11-0 run that went into early parts of the fourth quarter.
Fisk tried to get back into the game cutting the lead to 47-41 with six minutes to play. Miller, Trouten and King all hit shots coming down the stretch to seal the win, 57-50.
