Box Score Georgetown, Ky.-- Georgetown’s had three players in double-figures as they found an early lead and maintained the pressure throughout to defeat Cumberland 69-50.
The Phoenix played tough defensively but struggled to get many shots to connect at the basket. Neither team shot particularly well, with Cumberland going just 29.8% from the field compared to Georgetown’s 42.6%. The Tigers out rebounded CU 40-31.
Lauren King had a solid game coming off the bench, hitting 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from behind the arc for a 12 point game. Britany Miller picked up ten points and five rebounds, the only other Phoenix to hit double-figures. Iya Jones put up six points off the bench sinking 3-of-4 from the field.
The Tigers had three players hit double-digit points led by Madison Darnell who had a double-double with 12 and 13 boards.. Lisa Suljemani added 11 buckets for Georgetown while Izzy Lamparty recorded ten.
Cumberland and Georgetown traded buckets down the stretch of the first quarter with neither team leading by more than one possession. The Phoenix struggled to get anything to fall to start the second quarter as the Tigers went on an 11-0 scoring run at 21-10.
Lauren King checked into the game and hit Cumberland’s first field goal of the quarter to shave two points off the lead.
Georgetown quickly turned their lead into 14 points off of back-to-back layups and an and-one opportunity. Cumberland scored the last two buckets before the break with a pair of layups from Myajae Eubanks and Gordon to cut it to ten at 26-16.
Madison Darnell drained a three for the Tigers to keep Georgetown’s momentum going out of the break. Four Phoenix turnovers in the first three minutes helped the Tigers to spread their lead out of 15.
Miller came alive halfway through the third, putting away a pair of well-guarded layups and adding a steal to her stat line to bring it back within ten points for the Phoenix.
It was all Tiger pressure to wind down the third as they climbed their way to a 16 point advantage on a 6-0 scoring run.
Cumberland kicked up the pressure going into the fourth quarter as Iya Jones checked into the game and got the first bucket to fall. Lauren King followed up by draining the first Phoenix look from behind the arc for a 44-32 score.
CU was unable to make another scoring run from then on as the Tigers worked to spread out their lead. Georgetown would cruise to a 69-50 victory.
The Phoenix will stay on the road for their next game as the regular season is coming to a close. CU will face Bethel University next Thursday at 5:30 pm in McKenzie, Tenn.
