Box Score 1 SEWANEE, Tenn. –The Phoenix had a 3-1 lead against host Sewanee in game one before the Tigers stormed back for a 4-3 win. The men showed resiliency through game two as they took down former conference rival Tennessee Southern with a 4-1 win for their first win of the spring.
The first match of the day against Sewanee ran out to a flying start with two of the three matches going to a tiebreak and saw the Phoenix claim the coveted doubles point.
Julian Parada and
Vitor Ferreira had to come back from down 2-0 after their serve was broken to start the match, but they broke back to win 7-5 overall.
Following their win, the Phoenix needed just one more victory from the other two matches and it was
Daniel Wessels and
German Suarez at No. 2 doubles that helped claim the point. Winning in a tiebreak, the pairing went to the brink and snuck out a 9-7 victory, while
Dan Slapnik Trost and
Adrijan Hrzic were juxtaposed, losing 7-9 in their tiebreak.
Singles action saw the script flipped with the Tigers storming back. At No. 1 singles, Ferreria pulled out a magnificent victory, not dropping a single service game after losing his first set due to an early break. The Brazilian was made to work for his point however, winning the second and third sets in a tiebreak, 7-5 and 10-7 respectively.
At No. 2 singles Hrzic had his hands full, taking a tough 0-6 loss in the first set before gathering himself and pushing the second set to 4-6. The other Phoenix to win their match was
Julian Parada at No. 3, who was in the middle of a battle before his opponent had to pull out of the match and retire. Paul Daniel Meyer also played a tough match, splitting sets at No. 4 singles, but was dispatched in the third set tiebreak.
Suarez (1-6,4-6) and
Fernando Flores (4-6,5-7) dropped their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Overall, the Phoenix fell 4-3 and had just a short amount of time to regroup before playing former conference foes, Tennessee Southern.
The Phoenix responded in the second match of the day to get a 4-1 win over the Firehawks.
The doubles matches set the tone for Cumberland's dominance, as they secured the doubles point with a clean sweep across all three courts.
Julian Parada and
Vitor Ferreira paved the way with a solid 6-4 win over Tennessee Southern's Nickolas Rosa and Juan Camilo Moreno in the first doubles position. Following suit,
Daniel Wessels and
German Suarez delivered an emphatic 6-0 victory against Felipe Dias and Rage Matcuk in the second doubles position.
Adrijan Hrzic and
Dan Slapnik Trost sealed the deal with a 6-3 triumph over Tristian Kelly and Gaspar Audisio, ensuring Cumberland's advantage heading into the singles matches.
Daniel Wessels maintained his stellar form, dispatching Martin Cabrerra in straight sets with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Vitor Ferreira followed suit at No. 2, overcoming Nickolas Rosa with a solid 7-5, 6-3 win, further extending Cumberland's lead. Although Tennessee Southern managed to secure a point as Felipe Diaz edged out
Elisey Kalashikov in a closely contested battle, Cumberland quickly regained control as
Adrijan Hrzic clinched the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gaspar Audisio for the clinch.
The Phoenix will have a week to prepare for a tri-match with Milligan and Lincoln Memorial at Lincoln Memorial next Saturday.
