WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Cumberland men's tennis team took on the Cumberlands Patriots and dropped their second to last conference matchup, 5-2.
The Phoenix were able to jump ahead and grab the doubles point, winning on courts one and three. Vitor Perreira and
Julian Parada managed to take the top spot 6-3, and
German Suarez and
Daniel Wessels won in dramatic fashion, 7-6 (7-4) in a match tiebreak.
Elsewhere,
Adrijan Hrzic and
Dan Slapnik Trost couldn't find success at the No. 3 spot, falling 4-6.
In singles,
Daniel Wessels held down the fort at the top spot, though he was the only Phoenix to grab a win in singles. The South African won his match 6-4, 6-2.
There was a theme on the day in which the Phoenix took the first set of their match, but allowed the Patriots back in. At the No. 2 spot,
Vitor Ferreira was ahead early but lost 6-0, 5-7, 3-6.
Furthermore, both
German Suarez and
Paul-Daniel Meyer went ahead in their first set, but fell in both of their next two games. Suarez went 6-1, 3-6, 2-6, while Meyer's score went 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.
The final two matches of the day went the way of Cumberlands still, as
Adrijan Hrzic dropped the No. 3 spot to a score of 3-6, 2-6, and
Julian Parada lost at No. 4 as well, 3-6, 4-6.
Cumberland will play their final match of the regular season on the road on Monday, facing off against Lindsey Wilson.
