Celia Martin Earns her Second Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Lebanon, Tenn. - - For the second time this season, Celia Martin has earned Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. The goalkeeper had some big saves as the Phoenix defeated No.2 University of the Cumberlands.

Cumberland went down 1-0 against the Patriots, however, after taking time to regroup and refocus at half time, they came out strong and managed to equalize through a Seika Stull corner which Olga Wallemo got on the end of. The Phoenix equalized in the 57th minute, and Martin had to keep a level head less than two minutes later as she made a big save to keep the game tied.

The Patriots had a spell of possession around the 70 minute mark, which resulted in two shots in quick succession. Martin made herself big and commanded her area, making two huge saves to deny the Cumberlands another goal. Shortly after, Seika Stull played a killer pass to Uxia Varela who slotted it past the Patriots goalkeeper and put the Phoenix 2-1.

The Junior keeper has made 25 saves over seven games. Martin is now second in the Mid-South Conference for save percentage with .833 and leads the conference in goals against average with 0.77. The Phoenix have had five shutouts in nine games.

Cumberland will be back in action on Wednesday at home as they face Life University.
