Cumberland Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Ed Temple Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Cumberland Track & Field opened the indoor season on Saturday at the Ed Temple Classic, hosted by Tennessee State University, using the meet as an early-season tune-up.

On the men's side, Mohamed Hatem Galal opened his season in the 55-meter hurdles with a pair of strong preliminary races, placing second in his heat with a time of 7.88 before clocking an 8.00 to finish third in a later round.

J'Noy Davis was active throughout the sprint events, qualifying sixth out of 22 in the 55-meter dash prelims (6.79) before finishing sixth in the final with a time of 6.70. Davis also posted a runner-up finish in the 200 meters, placing second out of 22 in 22.77, while Diego Silva added a 13th-place showing in the 55-meter dash prelims (7.03) and a 10th-place finish in the 200 meters at 24.16.

Veron Ifill rounded out the men's results with a third-place finish in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 50.78.

The Phoenix women turned in several notable performances as well, highlighted by Ifunanya Muoghalu's victory in the 800 meters, where she took first place out of five competitors with a time of 2:38.88.

Leesa Mutandwa added a pair of podium finishes, placing second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.79 and clearing 1.57 meters to finish second in the high jump.

In the throws, Rita Francis competed in the shot put, recording a mark of 7.41 meters to place seventh overall.

Cumberland will be back on the track this upcoming weekend at the UAB Blazer Invitational in Alabama.
