Watson claims Two Titles as Women Finish Fifth at MSC Championship

COLUMBIA, Ky.-- Cumberland Women's Track & Field finished in fifth place at the Mid-South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Cumberlands captured the team title with 277 points, followed by Lindsey Wilson with 233. Georgetown placed third with 97 points, Campbellsville finished fourth with 70, the Phoenix placed fifth with 59 points, Freed-Hardeman totaled 19, and Bethel finished with 12.

The Phoenix were powered by a standout performance from senior Daveina Watson, who dominated the throws. Watson won the shot put with a mark of 13.92 meters and followed with another conference title in the discus at 41.00 meters.

On the track, Leesa Mutandwa led Cumberland's sprint group, placing third in the 400 meters in 58.08. She also contributed in the field by tying for third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters. Mutandwa anchored the 4x400 relay alongside Channon Cundiff, Jenna Towles, and Wendy Komane, as the group placed third with a time of 4:25.31.

Cumberland's middle-distance and distance runners were active throughout the meet, with Towles placing 15th in the 800 meters in 2:41.26 and Cundiff finishing 16th in 2:43.50 before adding a 13th-place finish in the 1500 meters in 5:32.21. Komane turned in one of the top distance performances for the Phoenix, finishing seventh in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:01.92 and sixth in the 5000 meters at 20:07.53. Alexa Rumpf placed 10th in the 5000 meters with a time of 21:15.68, while Laykin Ellis followed in 11th at 21:26.83.

In the field events, Avery Crockett and Rita Francis both competed in the shot put. Crockett contributed with an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 9.80 meters and later placed 11th in the discus with a mark of 23.80 meters. Francis finished 12th in the shot put at 8.30 meters.
