Phoenix Sit Fourth After Day One at MSC Championships

COLUMBIA, Ky.--Mid-South Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships opened on Sunday at Lindsey Wilson, with the Cumberland women's track & field team sitting in fourth place after day one. 

The Phoenix sit fourth in the team standings with 15 points through day one. The University of the Cumberlands leads the field with 98 points, followed by host Lindsey Wilson in second at 61 and Georgetown in third at 50 points. The Phoenix are in fourth followed by Campbellsville in fifth place at 14 points and Bethel in sixth at 2.

Cumberland's top performance of the day came from Daveina Watson, who delivered an impressive throw of 32.56 meters to place second in the javelin, earning eight team points and a spot on the podium. 

The Phoenix also picked up key points in the 4x800-meter relay, as the Cumberland squad of Channon Cundiff, Jenna Towles, Wendy Komane, and Alexa Rumpf finished third with a time of 10:18.13 to add six more points.

In the field events, Rita Francis contributed to the scoring effort with an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw (21.90m), securing one point for the Phoenix.

On the track, Leesa Mutandwa competed in the 200-meter dash prelims, clocking a time of 26.49 to finish ninth and just miss qualifying for the finals.

Cumberland will look to finish the Mid-South Conference Championship off on a strong note tomorrow.
