Tennis Returns to Lebanon After Perfect Outing Against Blue Mountain

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's and women's tennis team both remained undefeated on their trip to Memphis, taking down Blue Mountain Christian 6-1 and 4-3, respectively.

Doubles started with a clean sweep for the women's team, dropping just two total games in three sets. Valentina and Juanita Mendez swept their opponents at the top singles spot, followed up by the pairings of Maria Arbelaez and Elina Sungatullina and Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud only dropping one game each, winning 6-1.

Singles became a tighter contest, proving the doubles points importance. Maria Arbelaez won swiftly at number two as her opponent retired following CU's first set win, 6-0. Madeleine Darud then won 6-4, 6-0 and Ame Van Eijk took five singles 6-1, 6-1, helping to secure the necessary four points to win the match.

Timur couldn't find a way past the Toppers number one, falling 6-4, 6-0. Mendez and Ana Melo Bulcao Souza both also dropped their singles matches, but it was not enough for Blue Mountain to get themselves a win.

The men's tennis team had less of a battle on their hands as they won more swiftly, dropping just a single point all afternoon. Doubles was won on each court with the same score for either team, seeing the Phoenix drop the top doubles spot 6-3, but then winning by the same score on courts two and three thanks to the efforts of Arne Sohmer and Arthur Fernandes, as well as Mateus Mori and Mohamed Bouhlel.

Carlos Morillas was the only player to fall in singles, unable to make his way past the Toppers as he fell 6-2, 6-2.

Down the list there were nothing but straight set victories, starting off with Bouhlel winning 6-3, 6-3 on court two. Fernandes won with two bagels, alongside Arne Sohmer doing the same. Matheus Guarnieri won 6-1, 6-2 in his straight sets win at number five while Mateus Mori then wrapped it all up with a final 6-0, 6-0 win to take it 6-1 overall.
