Men's Track and Field kicks off Vanderbilt Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cumberland men's track and field team kicked off the first day of action at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

With the heptathlon accounting for many of the day's events, Dinkon Sinisterra was busy for a large part of the morning. Sinsterra started off strong with a second place finish in his 60 meter dash heat, gaining him fourth place overall with a 7.47 time. He also added in top five finishes in both the heptathlon long jump and shot put, aiding in a fifth place position to end the day.

Keeping events on the field, Juan Orejuela De La Rosa competed in the men's weight throw open class and managed a 19th place finish with a throw of 11.75 meters.

Two Phoenix competed in the high jump as Mackey Bonds finished tied for the eighth highest jump of the afternoon with a score of 1.92 meters, though he finished tenth overall due to ties above him. Just below him Liyu Scarlassara landed in 14th with a 1.82 meter jump.

Amir Mersal was the only Phoenix who competed in the unseeded men's long jump and finished in 20th place, landing a tenth of a meter out of a top 15 finish with a jump of 6.40 meters.

Wrapping up the day on the track, Nsikak Akpan landed a 17th place finish in the 200 meter with a time of 22.18. Tahmar Upshaw ran in the final event of the day, grabbing an 11th place finish in the 1000 meter, running a time of 2:32.58.

The Phoenix will take on the second day of the Vanderbilt Invitational tomorrow in Nashville. The first event is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m.
