Men's Track and Field wrap up strong showing at Vanderbilt Invitational

Nashville, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's track and field team wrapped up their second day of competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

Dinkon Sinisterra opened things up for the Phoenix again as he finished his last several heptathlon events; the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and the 1000 meter run.Sinsterra's best performance came in the hurdles, where he landed in fourth position, but the sophomore would ultimately finish in seventh place overall in the men's heptathlon.

Next up was the shot put open, and after a slow start yesterday, Juan Orejuela De La Rosa regained some confidence with an outstanding showing. His throw of 15.49 meters earned him a 5th place  finish out of a strong 18 man field. The mark met NAIA "B" standards with 17th best mark of the NAIA.

The rest of the day's events were on the track, starting with the 60m hurdles. Both Shawn Katsidzira and Renaldo Savoury ran the event, finishing 15th (8.53) and 20th (8.81) respectively, but were not able to make it to the finals.

Next up was the men's one mile run, and Alvin Kangogo had a good outing, running a time of 4:58.84.

Nsikak Akpan was also unfortunate to not qualify for the final in the 60m dash, as he ran the ninth best time in qualifying, 6.89 seconds.

The 400m had no Phoenix compete in the event, though they made up for it in the 800m. Grabbing one of the day's highest Cumberland finishes, Joel Forbes ran his way to a ninth place finish with a time of 1:53.18, a time that was good enough to hold off a host of division blue blood challengers. The time was the fifth-best n the NAIA marking "A" standards for Forbes.

Three more Phoenix placed in the event, as Tahmar Upshaw grabbed 27th place overall, and Lucas Phillips and Charles Hughes finished a respectable 50 and 51 respectively.

Running in the 3000m, Edwin Kigen ran a 9:23.15, placing him in 57th overall.

The final event of the day was the 4x400 and the Phoenix ran themselves just short of a top ten finish. Lucas Phillips, Benjamin Nyakudya, Tahmar Upshaw, and Joel Forbes combined for a 3:19.96, good for eleventh place.

The Phoenix will have a couple of weeks off before they will compete again, when they travel to Southern Alabama for the Jaguar Invitational.
