Men's Track & Field takes Third at MSC Indoor Championships with Four Gold Medals

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Cumberland men's track and field team took third place at the Mid-South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.

Cumberland athletes demonstrated their prowess by clinching a total of 14 medals across various events. These medals included four golds, four silvers, and six bronzes, highlighting the team's versatility and depth in different disciplines. 

In the overall team standings, Cumberland secured a third-place finish with a total of 159 points. While the University of the Cumberlands claimed the top spot with 295 points and Campbellsville University followed closely behind with 163 points. Lindsey Wilson College checked in at fourth place with 90 points.

Notable gold medalists included Nsikak Akpan, who dominated the 60m sprint with an impressive time of 6.82 seconds, showcasing his exceptional speed and agility. Additionally, Joel Forbes clinched gold in the 600m with a remarkable time of 1:20.27. Cumberland's relay teams delivered strong performances, with the 4x400m Relay and 4x800m Relay teams both securing first place.

Benjamin Nyakudya displayed his speed and agility by securing silver in the 400m with a time of 49.37 seconds, while Tahmar Upshaw and Jhonatan Rodriguez Osorno each won silver in the 600m and 800m, respectively. Furthermore, Juan Orejuela De La Rosa posted a meet record only to be bested by another in the Shot Put, earning silver with a throw of 15.74m.

Nyakudya in the 600m event, claiming a respectable third-place finish with a time of 1:21.06. Forbes secured his second medal with a third-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:57.68. 

Liyu Scarlassara soared to a third-place finish in the High Jump, clearing a height of 1.96m with grace and precision.  Amir Mersal had a strong showing in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump events, clinching third place finishes in both disciplines. In the Long Jump, Mersal leaped an impressive distance of 6.79m, while in the Triple Jump, he soared to a mark of 13.96m.

Shawn Katsidzira demonstrated his agility and skill in the 60m Hurdles, securing a fourth-place finish with a time of 8.49 seconds.

In the 200m,  Akpan showcased his speed with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 22.09 seconds to also earn points for the Phoenix.Johnson also competed in the event finishing seventh with a time of 22.18 seconds. Jhonatan Rodriguez Osorno displayed his endurance in the 600m, claiming fifth place with a time of 1:22.36. 

Ethan Rhoden in the 3000m Race Walk, finishing fifth with a time of 15:46.64. Rhoden also finished thirteenth in the 5000m with a time of 16:51.82.

Juan Orejuela De La Rosa exhibited his power in the Weight Throw, securing fifth place with a throw of 13.40m.


Lucas Phillips demonstrated his endurance in the 600m, finishing sixth with a time of 1:22.56. In the 400m, Phillips secured eighth place with a time of 50.71 seconds, to earn the Phoenix points.

In the Triple Jump,Scarlassara claimed sixth place with a jump of 13.56m. Ahmed Demerdash finished just behind him securing seventh place with a jump of 13.56m.

Renaldo Savoury took on the 60m Hurdles, finishing eighth with a time of 9.62 seconds. 

Elliott Hughes demonstrated his endurance in the 800m and 1000m events, finishing eighth in both with times of 2:03.62 and 2:36.16, respectively. Edwin Kigen showcased his stamina in the 5000m, finishing eighth with a time of 16:03.36. Kigen also finished thirteenth in the 3000m with a time of 9:17.38.

Dinkon Sinisterra demonstrated his skill in the Pole Vault, securing eighth place with a height of 3.00m, to earn a point for CU. 

Mackey Bonds exhibited his ability in the High Jump and Long Jump events, finishing tenth and thirteenth, respectively, with heights of 1.86m and distances of 6.22m. 

The Phoenix track and field team will now set their eyes to the NAIA National Championship in South Dakota in the coming weeks.
