Eric Zalaya Wins First Mid-South Defensive Player of the Week

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Goalkeeper Eric Zalaya is awarded the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Zalaya came up big on the road when the Phoenix went to Columbia and faced the No. 2 ranked Lindsey Wilson. The Spaniard recorded five saves, three of which came in the second half where the Blue Raiders were pressing to find a way back into the game.

The senior's leadership helped steer the ship during a chaotic second half that saw nine cards given out, helping the Phoenix hold onto a 3-2 victory on the road for Cumberland's best win for the program in three seasons.

This is Zalaya's first Defensive Player of the Week award of his Cumberland career, the first Defensive Player of the Week award the Phoenix have had this season, and the fifth Mid-South Player of the Week award that the Phoenix have won this season.

The Phoenix are back on the road against ranked competition as they face the No. 24 Bethel University Wildcats on October 10th in McKenzie, Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
