Phoenix Battle Back to Reach MSC Tournament Championship Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Cumberland women's bowling fought through the elimination bracket to earn a spot in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship, winning three straight matches after an early setback on Friday.

The Phoenix opened the day with a narrow 4-3 loss to Cumberlands (Ky.) in Round 2. Cumberland took an early 2-1 lead after winning the second game 181-179 and the third game 166-145, but Cumberlands responded to take three of the next four games, sealing the match with a 158-148 win in the seventh game (159-168, 181-179, 166-145, 185-177, 147-171, 132-154, 158-148).

Bouncing back in Round 3, Cumberland dominated Lindsey Wilson in a 4-1 victory. The Phoenix won the first two games convincingly, 176-152 and 188-145, before dropping the third 158-170. They quickly recovered, closing out the match with 191-145 and 184-129 wins to stay alive (176-152, 188-145, 158-170, 191-145, 184-129).

In Round 4, Cumberland battled Midway in a six-game series, earning a 4-2 win. The Phoenix jumped ahead early with back-to-back victories, 191-177 and 177-157, but Midway evened the series with wins in the next two games. Cumberland locked in from there, taking the final two games 159-144 and 140-134 to advance (191-177, 177-157, 157-180, 135-158, 159-144, 140-134).

Facing Cumberlands (Ky.) once again in Round 5, Cumberland flipped the script with a commanding 4-1 victory. The Phoenix came out strong, winning the first two games 174-132 and 171-104. After dropping the third 149-176, they edged out a tight 186-185 win before sealing the match with a 180-142 triumph (174-132, 171-104, 149-176, 186-185, 180-142).

Cumberland will now take on Pikeville in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Phoenix will need to defeat the Bears twice to claim the title.
