Mersal Earns All-American Honors on Day One of NAIA Indoor National Championship

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--Cumberland Track & Field kicked off the 2025 NAIA Indoor National Championship with a strong performance on the first day of competition. Amir Mersal secured All-American honors in the triple jump, while the Phoenix 4x400m relay team battled against a deep field in the prelims.

Mersal delivered a stellar effort in the triple jump, finishing fifth overall with a mark of 15.00 meters (49' 2½"), earning his spot as an NAIA All-American. The sophomore from Cairo, Egypt earns his first All-American honor of his career. 

In the 4x400m relay, the Phoenix quartet of Vernon Ifill, Mustapha Bokpin, Logan Istre, and Benjamin Nyakudya clocked a time of 3:14.69, placing 11th out of 29 teams. The time sets a new school-record in the event beating their qualifying time by two seconds prior to the National Championship. 

The Phoenix will have five student-athletes in action tomorrow across seven events.
