LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Track & Field opened the outdoor season on Friday at the Lee University Invitational, turning in a strong showing highlighted by a first-place finish, multiple personal bests, and several top-10 performances against a competitive field on the first day.
The Phoenix were led by freshman Bela Brandl, who made an immediate impact in his outdoor debut with a first-place finish in the men's 800 meters. Brandi crossed the line in a personal-best time of 1:54.84 to claim the event title and set the tone for Cumberland's weekend on the track.
In the sprints, Logan Istre paced the Phoenix in the men's 200 meters with an eighth-place finish, clocking a 21.66, while Veron Ifill added a top-20 performance with a time of 21.92 to finish 18th overall in a field of 88 athletes.
In the middle-distance events, Elliott Hughes posted a time of 1:59.98 in the men's 800 meters to place 13th, while Garrett Tunks followed with a 2:09.19 finish.
On the women's side, three Phoenix took on the 800 meters, led by Wendy Komane, who recorded a personal-best time of 2:31.88 to finish 17th. Jenna Towles (2:38.07) and Alexa Rumpf (2:38.23) also turned in solid efforts, placing 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
In the field events, Oghenetega Orekevwie finished fifth in the men's triple jump with a leap of 13.68 meters, earning a top-five finish for the Phoenix.
Cumberland will look to build on its strong start as the Phoenix continue the Lee University Invitational tomorrow set to begin at 8:00 a.m.
