Chappell Leads Phoenix with MSC All-Conference First Team Selection; Lay, Evans, and Brogdon All Capture Honors

LEBANON, Tenn.--The Mid-South Conference announced its 2025 softball all-conference teams on Wednesday, with Cumberland University earning four individual honors. Catcher Abby Chappell was named First Team All-Conference, while outfielders Ashley Evans and Anna Lay were recognized on the Second Team. First baseman Sara Brogdon earned a spot on the MSC Gold Glove Team.

Chappell earned First Team honors for the first time in her career after earning a Second Team nod in 2023. She proved to be one of the league's top catchers both offensively and defensively this season. The junior hit .355 over 41 starts, driving in 31 runs and slugging .612 with eight home runs. Defensively, she threw out 15 base runners and recorded a .972 fielding percentage behind the plate.

Evans earned Second Team All-Conference honors for the fourth time in her career. She led the Phoenix at the plate, posting a team-best .408 batting average and 15 stolen bases. The junior started all 39 games she played and led Cumberland in on-base percentage (.471), hits (49), and total bases (58).

Lay was named to the Second Team after earning First Team honors her freshman and sophomore season. She stood out offensively, hitting .394 with 28 stolen bases in 29 attempts. She ranked second on the team in hits (43) and was among the league's most consistent leadoff threats, scoring 30 runs on the year. Lay broke the Cumberland program record for stolen bases in a career earlier this season. 

Brogdon earned her first career Gold Glove honor at first base. The senior anchored the infield with a .993 fielding percentage, committing just two errors in 284 chances. She also contributed at the plate with a .314 average and nine doubles.

The Phoenix will take on 4-seed Lindsey Wilson tomorrow in their first game of the double-elimination bracket at the Mid-South Conference Championship.
