Men’s Golf Battles Into Top Five at UPike Fall Invitational

PRESTONSBURG, Ky.--Cumberland men's golf battled through 36 holes Monday at the UPike Fall Invitational, carding rounds of 297 and 300 to sit in fifth place heading into tomorrow's final round at Stonecrest Golf Course.

The Phoenix posted a two-round total of 597 on the par-71 track, keeping themselves in the middle of the pack as host Pikeville's "A" squad set the pace with a 565 after opening with 285 and following with a tournament-low 280. Lincoln Memorial's "B" team trails by just four strokes in second place at 569, while Lindsey Wilson is third at 577.

Chesnut has been Cumberland's steadiest hand so far, posting back-to-back rounds of 72 to sit tied for seventh at 144. His opening round he fired four birdies with nine pars, three bogeys, but finished with a double on No. 18. Chesnut added 11 pars in his second round with three more birdies and four bogeys to finish with two rounds of one-one-over. 

Bailey Rousseau was steady carding an even-par 72 after a 74 in the morning to climb into a tie for 13th at 146. In round one, Rousseau posted 14 pars a birdies, two bogey, and one double. He improved by two strokes in round two carding 13 more pars, one birdie, two bogeys and a double. The highlight came on par-5 No. 12 when he posted an eagle. One of just three eagles on the day by all players. 

Gustav Fredriksson came out firing with a first-round 72 that included three birdies at 1, 16, and 17, but he had to fight off four bogeys on the round. The afternoon was more of a grind as he slipped to a 78. He opened solidly with a birdie on No. 2 playing the first six holes one-under, but finished with four bogeys and a double.Still, Fredriksson sits tied for 23rd heading to day two. 

Harry Caygill put together rounds of 79 and 78 for a two-round total of 157, good for 41st. He had fired three birdies in the morning and added two more in the afternoon. Garrett Maria turned in identical rounds of 80–80 for 160, tying for 47th.

Playing as an individual, Stroup put together rounds of 79 and 76 to finish at 155, tying for 37th. After birdieing his first hole of the day, he finished with seven bogeys and one double. He improved by three strokes in his second round with two birdies, four bogeys, and one double. 

Cumberland will look to make a move in Tuesday's final 18 holes as the Phoenix try to climb into the top three against a competitive field. Tee times are set for the morning at Stonecrest.
