Cumberland Shoots 290 on Final Day Finishes Fourth in Prestonsburg

PRESTONSBURG, Ky.--Cumberland men's golf closed out the UPike Fall Invitational with its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, firing a 290 to finish fourth overall at Stonecrest Golf Course. The Phoenix posted rounds of 297–300–290 for an 887 total, climbing one spot on the final day and edging Kentucky State by a single stroke.

Host Pikeville captured the team title at 3-under-par for the 54 holes. The Bears posted a 285-280-284 for 849 strokes to hold off Lincoln Memorial and get a one-stroke win. Lindsey Wilson finished third at 10-over posting 862 total shots. .

Individually, the Phoenix were led by Gustav Fredriksson, who turned in a tournament-best 69 on the final day to climb all the way into 15th place. The freshman bounced back from a  78 on Monday afternoon with five birdies in his closing round, but fell with a triple bogey in his last hole. Fredriksson finished tied for 15th at 219 total shots. 

Just one shot ahead was Patrick Chesnut, who capped off a steady week with a 74 to close at 218 (+5), good for a tie for 13th. Chesnut posted 14 pars in his final round, along with a birdie at 12, giving him three rounds of 74 or better for the event.

Bailey Rousseau cooled off on Tuesday after a strong opening day, carding a 79 in the final round. He finished tied for 21st at 225 (+12). 

Harry Caygill delivered his best round of the tournament with a 73, vaulting up 11 spots in the final round into a tie for 30th at 230 (+17). Caygill picked up three birdies at No. 12, 14, and 2, but had five bogeys on the card. Playing as an individual, Carter Stroup matched Caygill's 230 total after steady rounds of 79–76–75. Stroup matched Chesnut's pars in the final round with 14. He added a birdie on No. 14, two bogeys, and one triple. 

Garrett Maria saved his best for last, trimming six shots off his opening rounds with a final-round 74. He finished 41st overall at 234 (+21). Maria fired four birdies in the final round on No. 2, 4, 10, and 12. 

Cumberland's closing 290 was its lowest team round of the young season. Pikeville's Kaeden Anderson and Lincoln Memorial's Cameron Grabeel each tied for first place at four-under par for the tournament. Three other players finished under-par including Saul Crist from Pikeville who notched a hole in one on No. 17 to help the Bears win by one stroke. 

The Phoenix are back in action next Monday and Tuesday as Cumberland hosts the Music City Collegiate at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.
