Phoenix Open Vanderbilt Invitational with Solid Day One Performances

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The Cumberland track and field teams opened competition Friday at the Vanderbilt Invitational, posting a series of solid efforts across the sprints, jumps, and combined events inside Vanderbilt's facilities.

Dinkon Sinisterra took on the men's heptathlon, where he currently sits sixth overall after four events with a total of 2,565 points. Sinisterra opened the day with a time of 7.52 seconds in the 60-meter dash before recording a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.34 meters. He continued to climb the standings with a fourth-place showing in the shot put (11.54m) and added another top-five finish in the high jump, clearing 1.79 meters to close out day one of competition.

In the men's 200-meter dash, the Phoenix placed two athletes in a deep field of 51 runners. Veron Ifill led the way with a time of 22.26 seconds to finish 20th overall, while J'Noy Davis followed close behind, crossing the line in 22.60 seconds.

The jumps also saw action for Cumberland, as Liyu Scarlassara competed in the men's long jump, recording a best mark of 5.69 meters.

On the women's side, Leesa Mutandwa turned in a strong performance in the high jump, placing eighth out of 13 competitors after clearing 1.54 meters. In the middle-distance events, Jenna Towles ran a time of 3:27.02 in the 1,000 meters, while Zora Neal competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 29.23 seconds.

The Phoenix will return to action on Saturday to conclude the Vanderbilt Invitational, with additional events and the remaining heptathlon competition still to come.
