Hall of Fame
Bernie Sanford Bass was one of the best basketball players of the first half of the 20th century, seeing great successes on the court for Cumberland. His team, which competed in the mid-1940's, defeated many powerhouse programs not just of the day, but that many would still recognize as great programs to this day.
Off the court, Bass was a decorated member of the United states Air Force. He retired on November 1, 1976 with 30 years, 5 months active duty service to his country. Awards and decorations include Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and Air Medal with thirteen Oak Leaf Clusters.
