Playing basketball on the goal near her grandfather’s barn was key in developing skills that Rosa would use later in her career. Her cousins and friends defended her hard to assist Rosa in becoming a savvy player.
She was an All-District, All-Conference and All-Midstate honoree at DeKalb County High School. After graduation, she attended then Cumberland College. Rosa loved playing basketball under Coaches Benny Jennings and Rick Reeves, 1983-1988, Stokes scored more than 1,000 points and grabbed 583 rebounds in her four-year career.
After graduation from Cumberland, Rosa continued her love for basketball by coaching. She was an assistant coach at Murry State University, Louisville, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech University, Long Beach State University in California. She completed her coaching career as Head coach of Georgia Southwestern State University in 2003.
Throughout her career as a coach and mentor, she encouraged the players to excel at the game of basketball.
Since her passing in 2003, Rosa has received these accomplishments:
-2009, Rosa was inducted into the Cumberland Sports Hall of Fame.
-2018, Rosa’s basketball jersey number, 55 was retired at Dekalb County High.
The family members of Rosa would like to extend a heart felt thanks to Cumberland University for giving Rosa the opportunity to play basketball, sponsoring tournaments in her name and placing her name on one of the seats in the gym.
Each year in December, Cumberland Women's Basketball hosts a classic in her honor.
