Kirby Jordan has had one of the most colorful careers in organized baseball at the time, a career which took him through three minor leagues, an-all-star series in Cuba, and spring training with a major league club. Jordan was a three-year letter winner and came to Cumberland from Florence, South Carolina.

After leaving the university he joined the military effort in World War II and enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8th, following the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Before the War, Jordan played at various different levels of professional and amateur baseball, including a year in 1938 where he batted .309 and sent 20 home runs into the stands.
