Jean Stone Denney was a member of the football team at Cumberland where he was the only law student with a football scholarship. In 1941 he was Center for the All Conference College Football Team and was recognized as a powerhouse in the middle of the field. After his playing career at Cumberland he was known for being a proud member of the community and won numbers of awards for his service.
He received for his dedicated service as field representative for the Department of Veteran Affairs and as a tireless member of the American Legion. Among those awards was Most Outstanding Service Officer for two years, the "Babe" Stegell award, the Century Club of the American Legion award and election as state Chef de Guerre of the La Societe des 40 & 8 in 1957. He was also at one time president of the Milan Chamber of Commerce and represented the Department of Agriculture as Goodwill Ambassador to Russia and Eastern Europe in 1962.
